Cruising and Rally Events

Cruising Programme 2012

Welcome to the New Season.

This is my fourth year as Cruising Secretary. Trying to vary the rally programme is a constant challenge as there are only a certain number of places that can be visited in a weekend. Last year we were fortunate that a couple of Bank Holidays were close together allowing us to arrange a trip to LONDON, which was well supported not only on the water, but also with members attending the shore activities by travelling up to London.

This year we will commence the programme at the beginning of May with a trip to Tollesbury and Brightlingsea, an easy shakedown sail that is usually well supported. The usual Whitsun weekend has been put back a week to coincided with the Queen’s Jubilee. With there being an extra days Bank Holiday added on, this allows us a four day cruise, some may wish to extend this into the next weekend, this would then give you nine days. The club cruise will consist of Saturday and Sunday in Ipswich, Monday in Suffolk Yacht harbour, with either a return home on Tuesday or an extended cruise maybe into the Deben.

Our next rally will be to Burnham and like last year it will include the Spitway Plate Race on the return leg, although this proved popular last year it is not compulsory to race. Our next club sailing event will be the Commodores Cruise which will begin on the 11th August and will finish with a rally in Ramsgate on the weekend of 25-27th August. You do not have to be part of the cruise to attend the rally; you can simply join the others in Ramsgate. Our usual end of the season rally to Heybridge will be on the 15-16th September. This year we are extending the cruising activities of the club and we will be holding a final cruise at Tollesbury, which will be a Halloween cruise on the 27-28th October, so do not take your boats out of commission too early this season. Come a join us for so scary fun at Tollesbury.

Hope you all have a great season.

Regards Chris and Sheila.

Report of the Cruising secretary to the AGM on the 2011 season

This season started with a Club cruise to London that was planed to last eleven days. However due to poor weather at the end of the cruise most boats opted for a later departure with the last of us leaving some two weeks after arrival. Whilst in London various events were organised which saw over 50, members, friends and families attending the different activities. My thanks go out to all those who participated and especially those who helped to organise the events and act as host boats.

Our first official Rally of the season did not fair so well with the weather. We were due to spend the Whitsun weekend in the Deben but with gale force winds forecast this unfortunately had to be abandoned. When I phoned up the harbour manager he told me that no one would be entering or leaving the Deben that weekend and was expecting my phone call. We along with four other club boats then opted for the usual plan B and headed to Brightlingsea for the weekend.

Our next Rally was to Burnham a destination that the club has not used for several Years. We planned this Rally to incorporate the return leg with the Spitway Plate Trophy to try to encourage more members to participate in racing. Out of 11 boats that attended the rally 8 boats started the race. With this success we plan to continue with this event next season. The next Rally was a new venue for the club, which saw 8 boats taking a trip to Wivenhoe and despite its drying pontoons a favourable time was had by all with requests to stage a rally here again.

Our last Rally out of the River was to Titchmarsh despite an unfavourable forecast of a F8 some boats ventured up the Wallet in variable conditions. We had a turn out of 22 for the meal at Walton and Frinton Yacht club. I was grateful to those who had booked a meal but did not sail up, still made the effort to drive up. Marina berths are easier to cancel than meals. Our final rally as usual was to Heybridge that is always a popular destination. We had 14 boats lock in and approximately 50 people turned up for the BBQ and games. We welcomed back Tony and Sue on Escapade to the club rally scene there first for a few years.

Following dinner and offering our appreciation to the club Commodore and Stewards for their excellent hospitality plans were made for a walk to Walton for a traditional day at the seaside the following morning. Fortunately taxis had been arranged to return to the boats on Saturday night. -see the Gallery page for more photos
